Spatial analysis of mobile network coverage and expansion in Nigeria

Context

A network operator needed to understand where coverage, demand and quality issues intersected — and where to invest next — across the whole country.

Approach

I analysed the spatial distribution of mobile network coverage, usage and expansion opportunities across Nigeria, combining census data from the National Population Commission, LandScan population grids, National Bureau of Statistics indicators and operator-level network traffic. Hotspot analysis highlighted regions with dense population, high economic activity and recurring network-quality issues.

Outcome

Outputs included coverage maps by operator, traffic-usage distribution and ranked expansion opportunities by state — giving planners a clear, evidence-based way to prioritise investment and optimisation rather than relying on intuition.
